Honoring India’s Spirit Through Art – Featuring Saikia Oner’s Independence Day Masterpiece

15 Aug 2025

This Independence Day, Banna Sprays wanted to do something special — to celebrate India’s history, culture, and heritage through the vibrant medium of spray art.
We invited artists to create a piece inspired by India, and while we only received one entry, it turned out to be a masterpiece worthy of the spotlight.

Winner saikia oner

The Artwork: A Tribute to Assam’s Heritage

The featured artwork comes from Saikia Oner, who chose to portray the Ahom dynasty and the legendary general Lachit Borphukan. Through bold lines, striking colors, and intricate detail, Saikia captured a piece of history that many outside Assam may not know — yet every Indian can take pride in.

It’s not just art; it’s a visual history lesson and a reminder of the courage and resilience that have shaped our nation.

The Ahom Dynasty: Six Centuries of Sovereignty

The Ahoms ruled Assam for nearly 600 years (1228–1826), an extraordinary feat in Indian history. Originating from the Tai people, the Ahoms established their kingdom in the Brahmaputra Valley and built a rich legacy of governance, infrastructure, and cultural preservation.

During their reign, Assam famously resisted Mughal conquest — thanks to visionary leaders and brilliant military strategy.

Lachit Borphukan: The Unyielding Defender

Among the greatest Ahom leaders was Lachit Borphukan (1622–1672), celebrated for his heroism in the Battle of Saraighat (1671). Facing a massive Mughal force, Lachit’s strategic brilliance and unwavering spirit led to a decisive victory that safeguarded Assam’s independence.

His legacy is not just regional but national — a symbol of duty, honor, and patriotism.

Why This Matters Today

By choosing to depict the Ahoms and Lachit Borphukan, Saikia Oner has reminded us that India’s freedom story isn’t confined to the events of 1947. It’s a tapestry woven over centuries, with countless heroes from every corner of the country.
